The Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha is elated to announce the impressive success of its students in the 2023 Nigeria-Malaysia International Debate Championship. The Anambra State Debate Team, representing Nigeria, comprised of students from schools under the Archdiocese, secured a resounding victory in the championship’s finals held at Pin Hua High School in Malaysia.
The intense debate witnessed a fierce exchange of ideas and persuasive arguments. After a riveting contest, Team Nigeria emerged victorious with a score of 2-1, solidifying their reputation as master debaters.
Representing the Archdiocese were students John Chukwudi Okey-Okonkwo and Ezechukwu Emmanuel Chukwumaobim from All Hallows’ Seminary in Onitsha, along with Okafor Obioma Blessing from Mater Amabilis Secondary School in Umoji. Their remarkable performance showcased the depth of talent and preparation instilled in students within the Archdiocese’s educational institutions.
Also part of the 4-man team is Mbachu Promise Chukwuemeka of St. Michael Comprehensive College, Nimo.
The Anambra State Debate Team’s triumphant win with a score of 2-1 over their opponents highlights the emphasis on critical thinking and effective communication within our schools. This accomplishment not only reinforces the quality of education offered by the Archdiocese but also underscores the dedication of both educators and students.
Other members of the contigent are the Debate Coaches: Mrs. Amaka Anekwe, Chiagozie Udorji and John Onuigbo, together with the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh and the Anambra State Post Primary Schools Services Commission (PPSC) Chairman, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu.
As the Archdiocese celebrates this victory, we commend the hard work, dedication, and commitment that these students have exhibited throughout their journey in Archdiocesan schools. This achievement serves as a testament to the holistic education approach upheld by the Archdiocese, nurturing well-rounded individuals who excel academically and ethically, and who contribute positively to society.
