The Catholic community in Scotland is mourning the death of Ronald McGregor, believed to be the world’s longest-serving altar server, who has died at the age of 103.
McGregor served faithfully at his parish, St Mary’s Church in Kirkcaldy, for more than 80 years. He began serving at the altar as a boy and never stopped, assisting at daily and Sunday Masses well into his centenarian years. His extraordinary longevity in ministry earned him recognition across Scotland and beyond.
Parishioners recall that even in advanced age, McGregor remained deeply committed to the liturgy. Known for his punctuality and reverence at Mass, he became a familiar and reassuring presence at the sanctuary, quietly carrying out his duties with precision and humility.
Over the decades, he witnessed significant changes in the Church, including the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, yet remained steadfast in his devotion. Younger altar servers often looked up to him as a mentor figure, inspired by his discipline and love for the Eucharist.
