Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has called attention to the consequences of Nigeria’s longstanding underinvestment in education, stressing that the Nation’s development is being held back by neglect in this critical sector.
Obi made these remarks during a visit to St. John Vienney Science College in Ukwulu, Anambra State where he congratulated students who recently emerged victorious in an International Science Competition held in June 2025.
He emphasized that education is the foundation of sustainable National development, adding that human capital development should be Nigeria’s top priority.
“There is no greater investment than in education. A country that prioritizes knowledge over resources will thrive,” Obi stated.
He illustrated his point by comparing Nigeria with oil-rich Venezuela, noting that despite having far more oil reserves, Venezuela still faces serious economic challenges due to its failure to invest in knowledge and innovation.
Obi donated a ₦10 million cheque to the school in recognition of its global achievement. He praised the students and their educators for bringing international acclaim to Nigeria and urged the young achievers to remain committed to their studies.
“Education is what makes individuals great. Focus on your studies, and you will stand out in life,” he encouraged.
He further criticized the government’s failure to adequately fund sectors essential to development, including infrastructure and energy, attributing these shortcomings to the broader neglect of education.
“What Father Obimma is doing here is what government should be doing. That’s the real problem with Nigeria,” he added.
Reverend Father Emmanuel Obimma, the Proprietor of St. John Vienney Science College, expressed deep gratitude for Obi’s donation and longstanding support.
“Mr. Peter Obi is a true pillar of education. His generosity and belief in human development continue to inspire us,” said Obimma.
He reaffirmed the school’s commitment to excellence and noted that philanthropic support has helped turn their vision into reality.
The students, visibly excited, thanked Mr. Obi for his encouragement and support for education. They said his visit would inspire them to prepare even harder for the next competition in December 2025.
The school, located in Dunukofia Local Government Area, outperformed counterparts from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom in the competition. Organized by Bring It On Africa and Debate Mate UK, the contest aimed to promote cross-cultural exchange and enhance students’ critical thinking, oratory, and reasoning skills.
