Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated laptops and ₦6 million to Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State—11 years after the school became the focal point of international attention following the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents in 2014.
In a public statement, Obi said he was informed of the school’s current condition by activist Aisha Yesufu, who raised concerns over the lack of computers, functional laboratories, and electricity at the institution, which now serves over 2,500 students.
“The school reportedly had only one desktop computer,” Obi said, prompting Yesufu to seek immediate support, including basic solar lighting and additional equipment for the computer room.
Due to security concerns, Obi said he was unable to travel to Borno State but instead met with representatives of the Chibok community in Abuja. During the meeting, he presented 10 laptop computers, three printers, and ₦2 million each for a laboratory setup, a computer classroom, and a motorised borehole—bringing the total contribution to ₦6 million.
Obi described the gesture not as a donation but as a commitment to supporting education in the community. “This is a promise to invest in the future of Chibok,” he said.
He also used the opportunity to highlight what he described as broader national issues relating to education funding and governance. “Our students lack labs, books, and even pencils, while leaders invest billions in luxury projects,” he remarked, calling for a reevaluation of national priorities.
