Straight from his trip to the Vatican to witness the Inauguration of the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has described the Pope’s message on the global fight against poverty as energising and one that deeply aligns with his long-held convictions. This is just as he made a donation of N20m to two Anglican institutions in Abuja.
Speaking about his Vatican trip, Obi said, ‘The Pontiff’s homily reaffirmed my belief that eradicating poverty requires deliberate sacrifice and consistent investment in critical development sectors – particularly health, education, and poverty alleviation.’
Upon landing in Abuja, Obi proceeded to visit the construction site of the Anglican Hospital in Kubwa, a medium-scale health facility currently being developed by the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa. He commended the vision and commitment of the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Revd. Duke T. Akamisoko, and in support of the initiative, donated the sum of ₦10 million.
In continuation of his outreach, Obi also visited the Anglican Comprehensive Secondary School, also in Kubwa, which is owned and operated by the same diocese. Emphasizing the central role of education in national development, he made an additional donation of ₦10 million to support the school’s growth and sustainability.
‘Education, healthcare, and lifting people out of poverty remain the three most powerful tools for building a better society. I remain committed to promoting each of them, because they form the most effective path to securing a prosperous future for our children and for our country,’ Obi said.
Mr. Obi’s donations bring renewed attention to the pressing need for private and public investment in sectors that directly impact the well-being and productivity of Nigerians.
