Contentment has been described as the bedrock of authentic wealth. The Parish Priest of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Rev Fr. Sebastian Vincent made this assertion in the parish, Sunday, October 13, 2024 when he hinged his homily on the day’s Gospel reading of Mk. 10:17-30 in which Jesus told the rich young man to sell all he had and give the proceeds to the poor.
The priest maintained that attachment to material things can push one into unimaginable things even as he called for wise use of money and other material possessions.
“True wealth lies in being content with what you have.” He affirmed. “Contentment is the secret. There are times when people think that you have so much without knowing that you are content with what you have. Contentment is everything.”
“So many of us have betrayed friends and family members because of quick money. So many of us have visited places we never imagined because of money. So much attachment to material things make us do terrible things. Love of money pushes people into things they never bargained for.”
“Let us be wise in our use of money. Let us be sensible in our use of money. Let us learn to love God and not the gift of God. Let us use what God has given us for the glory of His Name – to touch lives. Look around. There are people you can touch positively.”
Fr. Vincent told them that wealth itself is not bad. He explained that it is one’s attitude to wealth that makes it good or bad, reminding them that following Jesus entails prioritizing Him over all else,
