The African continent is witnessing a remarkable transformation, fueled by its burgeoning population and the increasing number of young Catholics. Recognizing the potential of these young individuals to shape their societies, Fr Stan Chu Ilo has launched a groundbreaking initiative: a 6-month online training course for aspiring African influencers. This inaugural semester, spanning from February to August 2024, has drawn in 102 enthusiastic candidates eager to embark on this transformative journey.
The aim of this pioneering program is to equip young Africans with comprehensive training across various domains, empowering them to become “missionary-influencers” on digital platforms. Through seven meticulously crafted modules, participants will delve into topics ranging from African palaver and synodal processes to digital influence strategies, from Catholic social doctrine to transformational leadership.
During the inaugural session held on February 9, 2024, Sister Josephine Bether Bakhita set the tone for the program, emphasizing its goal of harnessing the power of digital technology to spread messages of faith, hope, and love. The event, moderated by Likibi de Bergerac from Congo-Brazzaville and Milliam Kayange from Malawi, laid the foundation for a collaborative learning experience aimed at effecting positive change globally.
Distinguished instructors shared insights and wisdom during the inauguration day, with Dr. Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, delivering a heartfelt welcome address. Dr. Ruffini expressed his delight at engaging with the young participants and their mentors, envisioning a journey of self-discovery and professional growth. He underscored the importance of finding innovative ways to communicate the gift of faith in the digital age, emphasizing the transformative power of authentic witness guided by the Holy Spirit.
Drawing inspiration from Pope Saint Paul VI and Pope Francis, Dr. Ruffini highlighted the Church’s ongoing reflection on evangelization in the modern world. He emphasized the need to move beyond mere transmission of information to fostering genuine relationships and building communities of belonging. In this digital landscape, the challenge lies in bridging virtual connections to real human encounters, transitioning from social media communities to authentic human communities.
As the training unfolds, it heralds a new chapter in the journey of faith in Africa, empowering young Africans to become catalysts for positive change in their communities and beyond. Through their dedication and commitment, these future faith influencers will play a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of faith and hope for generations to come.
