The Justice, Development,Peace and Caritas( JDPC) Archdiocese of Onitsha, has urged both the Anambra State Government and residents to take the issues of refuse disposal and pollution seriously.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (Environment Day),the Executive Director,JDPC Archdiocese of Onitsha,Very Rev Fr Dr Edwin Udoye, said the refuse disposal system in Onitsha particularly, has not improved as expected.
According to him, most residents still throw bags of refuse into public drains owing to the fact that there are no central refuse disposal system where residents can dump refuse for eventual evacuation with refuse vehicles.
He also pointed out that refuse collection vehicles said to have been provided by contractors for evacuation of refuse were ineffective and hardly seen prompting littering of refuse on the streets and drainages.
Fr Udoye said further that traders in some of the markets do their businesses on top of refuse heaps which constitutes very serious hazard to lives of the traders.
On pollution and clean air,Fr Udoye cautioned generator users to avoid close contact with generator fumes which he said was poisonous. He urged residents and traders to always keep their homes and shops ventilated since carbon monoxide fumes from generators could poison the blood and kill silently.
Fr Udoye also pointed out that loudspeaker noise from various business houses, roadside and mushroom churches constitute nuisance to the health of residents and needs urgent control by the authorities for safer environment.
He commended authorities of OCHA Brigade in Anambra on their efforts to clear street trading and urged them to do more since street trading is not only dangerous but constitutes a huge environmental nuisance.
