Two individuals have tragically lost their lives, and 77 others sustained injuries in an explosion that rocked Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday evening. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the scene of the incident, confirmed the casualties and provided details about the unfortunate event.
The explosion occurred at Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, resonating across various parts of the city. Governor Makinde, following preliminary investigations by security agencies, revealed that the blast was caused by illegal miners who had occupied one of the houses in Bodija. He stated, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”
Governor Makinde directed that the government cover the medical bills of all victims and offered temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected. Numerous residences suffered damage, even several kilometers away from the explosion site.
The governor deployed first responders and relevant agencies to conduct comprehensive search and rescue operations, utilizing earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel. The injured were promptly treated and transported to public and private hospitals in Ibadan, with medical personnel on standby. Governor Makinde visited the University College Hospital (UCH) to check on some of the injured.
The update provided by Governor Makinde confirmed a total of 77 injured victims, with most treated and discharged, along with two fatalities. He extended condolences to the families of the deceased, pledged government support for medical expenses, and assured temporary accommodation for those affected.
Governor Makinde urged residents to call 615 for emergencies, emphasizing the importance of remaining calm and staying away from the immediate scene to facilitate uninterrupted rescue operations. He expressed gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and all assisting with rescue operations and medical care, concluding with a request for prayers for those affected by the disaster.
