A delegation of priests from Porto Novo Diocese, Benin Republic, recently concluded a significant visit to Onitsha Archdiocese. Porto Novo diocese has been a significant beneficiary of the goodwill of the mission-centered arm of Onitsha archdiocese. The visit, aimed at fostering stronger ties and mutual learning between the two ecclesiastical communities, was packed with engaging activities and visits to key institutions and hospitals within the Archdiocese.
On Wednesday 3 April, the delegation’s journey began at Shanahan University, where they engaged in sightseeing of the structures of the novel tertiary institution. During the visit, the delegates also rubbed minds with the the site’s Engineer, Rev.Fr Ututo Charles. The latter was grateful for the knowledge he got from the visiting priests.
Following their university engagement, the priests made their way to St Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha. They visited and prayed with patients while offering words of encouragement to them. They also admired the innovation and structural excellence of the hospital. Going further, the delegation also took time to visit Oluchukwu Microfinance Bank operated within the Archdiocese, which plays a crucial role in supporting local communities and small businesses through ethical banking practices.
The climax of their visit was a meeting with His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, the Archbishop of Onitsha. This meeting was not just a courtesy call but a profound opportunity for spiritual and administrative exchange. The Archbishop shared his vision for the Archdiocese, emphasizing the role of the church in social justice, education and faith nourishment.
The following day, the delegates’ journey continued as they proceeded to Holy Family Youth Village, Awka, where they engaged with faculty and students, sharing insights and experiences that spanned educational methodologies and religious teachings. Then they proceeded to radio sapientia where the head of news took them around the departments in the building. After, they had a merry filled dinner alongside Rev Fr Aloysius Orakwe and Fr Pius Nwankwo.
At the end of their visit to Onitsha Archdiocese, the priests from Porto Novo diocese were full of praise and admiration for the splendor that the Archdiocese reflects. There is a strong belief and optimism that in the nearest future, such laudable visit will be held again.
