Pope Leo XIV has reminded young pilgrims visiting Rome that “we are all pilgrims, and we are always pilgrims.” He shared this reflection on Saturday, as he welcomed young people from Denmark, Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland who are in the Eternal City for the Jubilee Year.
The Pope warmly greeted the group, which included students from the Diocese of Copenhagen and teachers from across the British Isles, saying their journey follows in the footsteps of countless faithful from their countries who, for centuries, have made the same pilgrimage to Rome.
Highlighting the city’s spiritual significance, Pope Leo pointed out that Rome is where Saints Peter and Paul laid down their lives in witness to the Gospel, becoming powerful examples of living faith. He encouraged the pilgrims to draw inspiration from these saints, saying, “By visiting the various holy places here, may you find hope and strength in their example.”
Speaking about the meaning of a pilgrimage, the Pope said it offers a special chance to step away from the noise of everyday life and come closer to God. “Pilgrimage gives time and space to let the Holy Spirit work in your heart, shaping it to be more like Christ’s,” he said.
To the young people, Pope Leo shared a heartfelt message: “God created each of you with a purpose and a mission.” He encouraged them to use this spiritual journey as a time to pray and reflect, so they can hear God’s voice more clearly in their hearts.
Turning to the teachers, Pope Leo praised their role in shaping young minds and spirits. “Children watch you closely,” he said. “You are models of faith—not only in what you teach, but in how you live.” He urged them to remain rooted in Christ, who is the true teacher and guide.
Before concluding, the Holy Father reminded everyone that the pilgrimage doesn’t stop in Rome. “Faith is a journey, and your daily life is a continuation of that pilgrimage,” he said. “Even when the path is difficult, God walks with you—supported by His mercy, the example of the saints, and the love of your fellow believers.”
