On Saturday, Pope Francis addressed the participants of the Annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), highlighting three key characteristics essential for their service to the Church’s mission: communion, creativity, and tenacity.
Focusing first on communion, the Pope underscored that the foundation of the missionary nature of the Church lies in the love with which God seeks and saves humanity. He called on the PMS to live a spirituality of communion with God and with others, warning against proselytism. The Pope clarified that the Christian mission is not about spreading abstract truths or religious convictions but about enabling others to experience God’s love. He encouraged the PMS to deepen this “spirituality of missionary communion,” aligning with the Church’s current synodal journey. He emphasized the importance of walking together, listening to each other, and engaging in dialogue.
Next, Pope Francis spoke about creativity, urging the PMS to let divine love inspire new ways of evangelizing and serving, especially the poorest. He highlighted that evangelical creativity should originate from Christ’s charity, fostering innovative approaches in missionary activities. This creativity is also crucial in encouraging the generosity of individuals and institutions that support the Church’s missionary endeavors.
Finally, the Pope emphasized tenacity, urging the PMS to remain steadfast and persevere in their mission despite challenges. He reminded them that the divine mission involves tirelessly reaching out to all, even amidst difficulties. Pope Francis cited the example of Christians who have faced martyrdom for their faith, such as those recently killed in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Coptic Martyrs killed by the Islamic State in Libya in 2015. He exhorted the PMS not to be discouraged by burdens and weariness but to focus on the positive aspects and the joy derived from God’s work.
Pope Francis also stressed the importance of patience and compassion for those who have faltered in their faith journey. He concluded by thanking the PMS for their dedication, particularly in promoting the missionary responsibility of the faithful and caring for the children of the Pontifical Society of the Holy Childhood.
