Pope Francis, in a gathering of university rectors from Latin America and the Caribbean, announced the title of his forthcoming Apostolic Exhortation on the environment: “Laudate Deum.” This announcement was made during a discussion addressing various pressing issues, including climate change, migration, and the culture of waste.
The Holy Father emphasized the urgent need to address climate change and environmental degradation. He described the importance of a responsible approach to nature, stating, “Today, humanity is tired of this misuse of nature, and must return to the path of good use of nature.” He also urged universities to establish networks of awareness, emphasizing the significance of organizing hope for young people to address these critical environmental issues.
Pope Francis expressed his concern over a “throwaway culture” that neglects the responsible use of natural resources, creating inequalities and exploitation. He underscored the need for universities to instill humanistic values and promote dialogue, enabling students to engage in politics as a noble vocation and tackle issues like migration in a humanistic and Christian manner.
Furthermore, the Pope decried the mistreatment of migrants in Europe and emphasized the importance of welcoming, accompanying, promoting, and integrating migrants. He firmly stated that sending migrants back is “criminal” and urged universities to address this humanitarian crisis with empathy and depth.
In summary, Pope Francis called upon universities to be more than mere educators, encouraging them to help students think, feel, and act in harmony with the challenges of our time. The Apostolic Exhortation “Laudate Deum” is scheduled for release on October 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, and is expected to provide valuable insights into addressing pressing environmental issues.
