The Prefecture of the Papal Household has confirmed that Pope Francis will celebrate Mass for the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 28, at Rome’s Women’s Penitentiary of Rebibbia. The private visit, scheduled for 4 PM, will include a Mass presided over by the Pope and meetings with female inmates and staff.
Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, a period of reflection on the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ leading up to Easter Sunday. During the Mass, known as “in Coena Domini,” the Pope traditionally washes the feet of several individuals, following the example set by Jesus before His crucifixion.
This year’s celebration, similar to the Pope’s previous visit to Rebibbia prison in 2015, will remain private and will not be open to the general public.
