In a bold statement that has sparked renewed political debate nationwide, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has reiterated his promise to serve only one four-year term if elected President of Nigeria. Describing the vow as “sacrosanct,” Obi positioned the declaration not as a political stunt but as a reflection of his long-standing commitment to principled leadership and efficient governance.
Drawing inspiration from the legacies of global statesmen like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, Obi argued that effective leadership is not defined by duration in office, but by the depth of purpose and integrity. “Longevity in office is not a mark of success,” he said, “rather, it is purposeful, accountable service — however brief — that defines true statesmanship.”
Obi’s declaration comes amid growing public scepticism about political promises in Nigeria. Responding directly to critics who have dismissed his one-term vow as unrealistic or unserious, Obi stated: “I understand the basis of their scepticism… They are judging me by their own standards — where political promises are made to be broken. But Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth.”
He referenced his time as Governor of Anambra State, where he says he consistently delivered on his promises in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and fiscal discipline. “My word is my bond,” Obi declared, adding that he fulfilled all his pledges to the people without deviation or excuse.
The former governor also addressed disparaging remarks made about his pledge. “One person remarked that even if I swore by a shrine, I still wouldn’t be believed. Another suggested that anyone talking about doing only one term should undergo psychiatric evaluation,” he said. “But I did not swear by a shrine, nor have I been certified mentally unstable as a result of honouring my word.”
Obi outlined a vision for Nigeria that includes restructuring governance systems, tackling insecurity, revamping education and healthcare, and repositioning the economy towards productivity and sustainability. He believes these goals are achievable within a single four-year tenure, provided the leadership is focused, transparent, and accountable.
“If elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office,” he vowed. “Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is prepared to make a meaningful difference.”
Reaffirming his belief that “a new Nigeria is POssible,” Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to reclaim trust in public leadership, stressing that his track record is proof that integrity in politics is not only possible but necessary for national rebirth.
