Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza of Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Yola expressed deep concern over the state of Nigeria, where he highlighted the severe impact of “galloping inflation” and insecurity on people’s livelihoods. Speaking during the Closing Mass of the 2024 Diocesan Pastoral Council Meeting at St. Theresa’s Catholic Jimeta Cathedral, Bishop Mamza described Nigeria as “really sick” due to multidimensional poverty and economic crisis.
He lamented the dire situation faced by Nigerians, citing challenges such as exorbitant prices, hunger, inability to pay school fees, evictions due to rent arrears, and lack of access to healthcare. Bishop Mamza emphasized the profound effect of financial stagnation on church projects and everyday necessities like food.
Highlighting the unaffordability of basic commodities like cement, Bishop Mamza called on the government led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to devise effective solutions to alleviate the country’s suffering. He warned of bleak prospects if urgent actions are not taken to address the current challenges.
Additionally, Bishop Mamza urged the Nigerian government to demonstrate humility by seeking assistance from other countries and relevant organizations to mitigate the crisis. Despite the hardships, he remained hopeful that Nigeria would overcome its woes, encouraging fellow citizens to seek solace in faith amidst the adversity.
