In exclusive excerpts from his upcoming autobiographical book titled “Life. My Story in History,” co-authored with Vatican journalist Fabio Marchese Ragona, Pope Francis elucidated on his perspective regarding a potential resignation and various facets of his papacy. Revealed by the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera,” the passages shed light on the Pope’s stance on resignation and his reflections on pivotal moments during his pontificate.
Addressing the hypothetical scenario of his resignation, Pope Francis clarified that should he step down, he would prefer to be known as “Bishop Emeritus of Rome” rather than “Pope Emeritus.” He envisaged residing in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, assuming the role of a confessor and extending communion to the sick. However, he underscored that resignation remains a distant possibility, citing the absence of compelling reasons and his commitment to ongoing projects, despite occasional challenges.
The Pope outlined the conditions under which he would contemplate resignation, citing a severe physical impediment as the sole plausible circumstance. In such a scenario, a letter of resignation, drafted at the outset of his pontificate, would be submitted to the Secretariat of State. Nevertheless, he reassured that he is currently in good health, with numerous endeavors yet to be realized.
Moreover, the excerpts from the book delve into Pope Francis’s steadfast defense of human life, condemning abortion as “murder” perpetrated by “hired killers.” He criticized surrogacy as “inhumane” and advocated for the protection of life from conception to death. Additionally, the Pope’s passion for soccer and his decision to abstain from watching television feature prominently, alongside reflections on his past experiences in Cordoba and personal growth.
The autobiography also recounts pivotal events, including the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the subsequent conclave leading to Pope Francis’s election. He lamented the politicization of the figure of the Pope Emeritus, expressing dismay at the controversies fueled by ideological agendas.
Reflecting on contemporary issues, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of cultural diversity within the European Union and called for unity amidst differences. He urged young people to take action in safeguarding the planet, emphasizing the urgency of addressing environmental concerns.
