The Government of Akwa Ibom State hosted the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria at a State House Reception in Uyo on September 17, 2025, where Governor Pastor Umo Bassey Eno reiterated his belief that the Church offers a model of order, service, and moral leadership from which society can learn.
At the event, which coincided with the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria’s (CBCN) 2nd Plenary Session held in Ikot-Ekpene, the governor welcomed members of the Church’s leadership, including Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, President of the CBCN, and Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, the Apostolic Nuncio.
In his address, Governor Eno praised the Church’s role as a voice of conscience—demanding justice, defending human rights, serving the vulnerable, and ensuring governance that places human welfare at the centre. He told the bishops that power should not be mystified or used for self-serving ends, but rather demystified and leveraged in the service of the people.
The governor also reviewed some of his administration’s achievements, notably social welfare programs. He highlighted that his government has constructed and handed over 205 “Arise Compassionate Homes” for the poor, widows, and other vulnerable groups; instituted monthly stipends for elders across wards; and expanded free medical insurance.
Church leaders at the reception, including Bishop Camillus Umoh of Ikot Ekpene Diocese, commended Governor Eno for his leadership style and his consistent support for the Church’s mission in the State. They expressed optimism that this partnership between Church and government will bear fruit in improved lives for citizens.
