In a shocking turn of events, Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA and outspoken Christian conservative, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem. The deed, widely described by state authorities as a targeted assassination, occurred just after midday during an event that drew approximately 3,000 attendees.
Kirk, who had built a national profile through his activism for free speech, defense of Christian values, and criticism of gender ideology, was responding to audience questions about transgender rights and gun violence when he was struck by a single bullet.
Law enforcement officials believe the shot came from a rooftop on campus. They have recovered what is believed to be the high-powered bolt-action rifle used in the shooting and secured nearby woods in their search. A person of interest has been taken into custody but was later released; the shooter remains at large.
Reactions have poured in across political and religious lines. Utah’s governor called the killing a political assassination. Flags have been ordered flown at half-staff, as prominent voices, including Vice President JD Vance and former President Donald Trump, publicly mourned Kirk.
Among faith leaders, Catholic bishops also joined the chorus of grief and prayer. Bishop Oscar A. Solis of Salt Lake City said he would pray for Kirk’s soul, for all who were present at the event, and for the many who admired him. He issued an appeal for calm and reflection amid anger and shock.
Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika and their two young children.
