The heinous kidnapping and murder of catechist Edouard Yougbare in Burkina Faso, West Africa, has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting widespread condemnation from the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN).
ACN, a staunch advocate for religious freedom and humanitarian aid, expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of Yougbare, who was abducted by terrorists on Thursday night. His lifeless body was discovered near Zigni the following morning, underscoring the brutal and senseless nature of the crime.
Yougbare, a dedicated member of Saatenga parish in Fada Gourma, Burkina Faso, was known for his unwavering commitment to serving his community. His untimely death has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, evoking widespread grief and anguish.
María Lozano, press and public relations director of ACN International, conveyed heartfelt condolences to Yougbare’s loved ones and the entire community of Saatenga, grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy. She lamented the perilous conditions faced by catechists in Burkina Faso, who courageously risk their lives to uphold their faith and minister to their fellow believers.
The devastating loss of Yougbare follows a distressing pattern of violence targeting religious figures in the region. Just two months prior, another catechist was mercilessly slain while leading a Sunday celebration in a chapel in the Diocese of Dori, further underscoring the grave threats faced by those dedicated to spreading the Gospel.
In light of these disturbing events, ACN issued a fervent call for prayers for the families of the victims and the embattled community of Saatenga. As Burkina Faso grapples with escalating insecurity and religious persecution, solidarity and support from the global community are more crucial than ever. ACN reaffirmed its commitment to standing in solidarity with the persecuted Church and providing assistance to those in need amidst the ongoing crisis.
