The Catholic Bishop of Zaria, Most Rev Dr. Habila Tyiakonaboi Daboh celebrated the Mass of Sunday, September 7, 2025, at St Augustine of Hippo, Federal University of Education (FUE), Kongo Zaria, during which graduating members of Nigeria Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS), were honoured. The bishop who congratulated them for the milestone they have achieved, charged them to put the knowledge they have acquired in the institution over the years to good use, even as he reminded them that though they have completed that phase of their lives, it is not the end that there is in life for them.
Defining wisdom as the divine gift which teaches one not only how things work, but also how to use what they know for the good of others, he told them that intelligence and brilliance without wisdom leads to foolishness.
“You have acquired knowledge through years of study.” He told them. But always remember that without God’s wisdom, knowledge can be destructive. I want to encourage all of you, when you leave this place, do not think it is the end. Do not look down on anybody. Life is transient. Foolishness makes one to look down on another person, because, if you have it today, the foolishness will make you not to remember that you may lack tomorrow. Whatever you are privileged to have today, remember your brothers and sisters.”
“If we do not use this knowledge given to us by God wisely, it will us to destruction. You and I know what is happening between Israel and Gaza. You and I know what is happening between Russia and Ukraine. Even if we bring it back home, we know that till today, as I speak with you, not many people still sleep with their two eyes closed, because they are not sure who may be outside their homes.”
“My dear brothers and sisters, who are graduating today, it is a special day for you. You have made history in the University of Education. Now jobs are already waiting for some of you. Some of you do not know where they are going to. Some are saying, ‘Let us go and see what is in the market.’ If you have today, do not forget there is tomorrow. If you have today, don’t forget those who not have. That same sister may be the person who will save you tomorrow.”
The Chaplain, Rev.. Fr. Dr. Jonathan Yabiliyok thanked the honourees for contributing to the growth of the chaplaincy, even as he implored them to give back to the chaplaincy when they have the ability to do so and to always remember that the worship community contributed a lot, in shaping their lives and future.
