The Local Ordinary of the Catholic Diocese of Zaria, Most Rev. Habila Tyiakonaboi Daboh has bemoaned the poor living condition of some families within his jurisdiction, observing that many families find it difficult to cope with the daily demands of life.
Attributing the problem to bad times occasioned by lack of job opportunities, the bishop proffered the Church’s intervention through the establishment of cooperative societies; creation of vocational training centers and promotion of entrepreneurship.
“Economic inequality is a significant challenge in Zaria.” His Lordship noted. “Many families struggle to meet their basic needs due to unemployment and lack of opportunities. Parish-based cooperatives can provide low-interest loans and training to support small businesses, particularly for women and youth.”
“Vocational training centers can equip individuals with practical skills in areas such as carpentry, welding, and ICT, enabling them to secure employment or start their own businesses. Supporting parishioners in developing innovative business ideas can foster growth and reduce dependency.”
Bishop Daboh catechized that the Church has a prophetic role to play in advocating for justice and equity. He intimated that followers of Christ can challenge systems of oppression and corruption that perpetuate poverty and inequality.
The bishop disclosed that organizing social justice workshop can educate parishioners about their rights and responsibilities, empowering them to advocate for fair policies and practices. He added that, promoting civic engagement can encourage active participation in local governance. This he, affirmed, could ensure accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
