Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, has underscored the urgent need for comprehensive policies and legislation aimed at addressing moral decadence and fostering the well-being of the youth. Speaking at a press conference organized by the diocese in Oyo town, Bishop Badejo emphasized the imperative of collaborative efforts between the Church and the State in advancing the welfare and development of society.
Addressing a range of pressing issues, Bishop Badejo highlighted inequity, limited access to holistic education, and a dearth of job opportunities as critical challenges that demand immediate attention. He expressed deep concern over the escalating involvement of youths in activities such as banditry, kidnapping, and other societal ills.
Bishop Badejo called upon governments at all levels to actively engage youths in decision-making processes, community development initiatives, and youth-centered projects to empower them as catalysts for positive change. Additionally, he urged authorities to closely monitor the efficacy of existing youth intervention programs, gather pertinent data, and conduct comprehensive evaluations to inform future strategies and actions.
Emphasizing the paramount importance of security, Bishop Badejo stressed the need for a holistic approach involving collaboration among governmental agencies, traditional and community leaders, stakeholders, and the Church. He urged the Oyo State Government to provide financial support to educational institutions operated by the Church and other reputable private organizations, citing their pivotal role in delivering quality education and moral formation to youths.
Furthermore, Bishop Badejo reiterated the call for the return of Catholic schools appropriated by the state many decades ago, advocating for their restoration to enhance missionary service, reinforce ethical standards in education, curb crime, and benefit all members of society, regardless of religious affiliation.
Commenting on the forthcoming local government elections in Oyo State, Bishop Badejo urged the State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) to ensure a transparent, fair, and peaceful electoral process. He urged Nigerians to utilize social media platforms responsibly to promote values such as the sanctity of human life, respect for the rule of law, and solidarity with the vulnerable.
Acknowledging the state government’s efforts in agricultural development and infrastructure improvement, Bishop Badejo called for further subsidies on farm inputs and the enforcement of regulations to curb multiple taxation on agricultural produce transportation. Additionally, he called for special attention to be given to the restoration of township road networks in various towns across the state, particularly in historic areas like Oyo town, to boost tourism and economic growth.
