On Wednesday, August 28, Pope Francis welcomed the bishops of the Latin Episcopal Conference of the Arab Regions during an audience in the Salita of the Paul VI Hall. Addressing the group, the Pope emphasized the importance of their role in a region marred by conflict and instability.
During his remarks, Pope Francis acknowledged the intense tensions gripping the Middle East, where conflicts have become deeply entrenched, leading to widespread devastation, countless deaths, and pervasive suffering. The Pope expressed concern over the growing resentment and hatred that fuel ongoing and future tragedies.
“I am pleased to meet you during your plenary assembly in Rome,” Pope Francis said, expressing his solidarity with the bishops and the communities they serve. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in their witness to faith and to engage in respectful, sincere dialogue with all.
“Keep hope alive,” the Pope urged. “Be signs of hope for everyone, fostering peace, brotherhood, and respect through your words and actions.” He called on the bishops to promote reconciliation and to work towards overcoming long-standing divisions and hostilities that threaten to engulf the region further.
Pope Francis also highlighted the importance of providing adequate Christian education to students in public schools, particularly in areas where Christians are a minority. He stressed the need for strong Christian formation to help believers articulate their faith and sustain Christian hope in challenging cultural contexts.
In closing, the Pope offered his heartfelt blessings and entrusted the bishops to the care of Our Lady. He encouraged them to continue their pastoral efforts with renewed strength and to support one another in prayer.
