To mark World Sickle Cell Day, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has donated a brand new ambulance to the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area.
The donation was made on behalf of Chukwuma by the YPP Deputy Governorship candidate, Chief Uzu Okagbue, during a visit to the facility. The gesture was described as part of the party’s ongoing commitment to addressing healthcare challenges in the state, particularly those affecting vulnerable populations.
World Sickle Cell Day, observed annually on June 19, is recognized by the United Nations as a day to raise global awareness of sickle cell disease, especially in regions with inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
Speaking during the handover, Okagbue shared personal reflections on the impact of sickle cell anaemia, noting that both he and Sir Paul Chukwuma have lost close family members to the disease. “Sir Paul lost his brother, Hyginus Chidalu Chukwuma, and I lost mine, Sunday Okoye,” he said. “Today, we honour their memories with action. We believe sickle cell disease can be defeated if we commit ourselves fully.”
Okagbue praised Chukwuma’s consistent support for the Agulu Sickle Cell Home, recalling that he had previously adopted the centre and continued to support its work. “His commitment has been unwavering,” he noted.
The Director of the Sickle Cell Home, Aisha Edwards Maduagwu, commended the donation, describing the ambulance as a much-needed asset that would significantly improve emergency response and patient care for the children under their care.
Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, commissioned the new ambulance for use. He was represented at the event by his longtime aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem.
Also present at the ceremony were several political and civic figures, including former House of Representatives member Hon. Ralph Okeke; YPP South East Vice Chairman, Chief Mike Ejezie; Chief Jude Osude; and former Transcorp Holdings CEO, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo.
In his closing remarks, Okagbue assured the home’s management of continued support, stating: “There is no problem too difficult to solve when love for the people outweighs personal interest.”
