The Vatican has officially recognized the veneration of Our Lady of Mercy linked to the Marian Shrine in Pellevoisin, France, marking a significant moment for the local and international faithful. Cardinal Víctor Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, gave his approval in a letter to the Archbishop of Bourges, affirming the spiritual value of the devotion without making a definitive statement on the supernatural nature of the apparitions experienced by Estelle Faguette.
Rather than focusing on the miraculous aspects, Cardinal Fernández emphasized the profound spiritual messages that Faguette attributed to the Virgin Mary. These messages, he noted, are rooted in a call to deeper faith and charity, qualities that reflect the Holy Spirit’s work in guiding believers. During the apparitions, the Virgin is said to have spoken to Faguette about the love of Jesus Christ, the power of simplicity, and the virtue of patience in times of suffering.
Estelle Faguette, born in 1843 to a modest family, lived a life of hardship and illness. At the age of 32, while suffering from an incurable disease, she claimed to have experienced a series of Marian apparitions. After the fifth apparition, the Virgin allegedly promised her healing, a promise that was miraculously fulfilled. In 1893, the Church confirmed this miraculous recovery, and the Archbishop of Bourges officially recognized the event with the Holy Office’s approval.
Faguette’s writings convey the comfort and guidance she received from the Virgin Mary during her illness. The Virgin’s messages, focused on spiritual encouragement and correction, continue to resonate with pilgrims who visit Pellevoisin today. A notable theme from the apparitions is the Virgin’s plea for greater peace within the Church and reverence for Christ in the Holy Eucharist, urging more attention and devotion during the celebration of Mass.
With this recent Vatican approval, Cardinal Fernández has highlighted the importance of devotion to Our Lady of Mercy, particularly for those seeking a spiritual life grounded in trust, simplicity, and love. The Vatican has issued a Nihil Obstat decree, formally permitting this veneration and encouraging its spread among the faithful.
In conclusion, the Cardinal emphasized that devotion to Our Lady of Mercy is free from doctrinal concerns and offers a meaningful path for deepening one’s faith. The Vatican’s endorsement hopes to inspire believers worldwide to embrace this devotion as a way to strengthen their relationship with God and find spiritual solace.
