In a bid to commemorate 2023 United Nation world environmental day, members of Justice Development and Peace Commission JDPC Dunukofia region under Onitsha Archdiocese on Wednesday called on governor Charles Soludo to tackle flood menace that is currently sacking residents of Umusiome, in Nkpor Idemili local government area of Anambra.
The Commission led by the regional chairman Mr John Iwuanyanwu made the call while touring the gully erosion sites and flooded areas in the community with placards.
The JDPC members at the same time sensitized the residents of the area on the need to dispose there refuse properly and avoid throwing it inside water channels/ gutters as that will pave way for more devastating flooding to occur.
Mr John Iwuanyanwu who spoke to Trinitas correspondent stated that it is time government come to the rescue of the residents since the said flooding has sacked some landlords and tenants. “We solicit the Anambra state government to come to aid of the people and institutions around Umusiome community Nkpor and envrons as that area is heavily flooded and threaten human lives and houses around the area. We also appeal to the residents to be environmental friendly. Dont block water way. No discriminate of dumping of refuse waste. Plant trees to help check flooding of the area.” He thanked the the director JDPC Onitsha Archdiocese Fr Edwin Udoye for inspiring and supporting them to carry out the sensitization.
Also the principal of Government Technical College Nkpor Mrs Chinwe Okolodibe who received the JDPC members that took the sensitization programme to her school, called on the state government to urgently intervene in their own case because erosion has cut off the school entrance to the extent that teachers and students have to climb over deep gully every morning before entering the school compound, adding that whenever rain falls, movement automatically ceases in the area due to the heavy flooding.
Elder Edwin Mbaegbu who spoke on behalf of the landlords of the area disclosed that many houses have been washed away by the heavy flooding, adding that the situation is getting worst by the day. He begged the state government to swim into action and save the residents from imminent submerging.
