In celebration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Leo’s Parish in Lagos hosted an event on Sunday afternoon, providing meals for the poor and homeless, despite the feast falling on a Sunday and not taking precedence in the liturgy. The event, initiated by Marian devotees, was a demonstration of faith and service.
Among those present were John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Nigeria’s Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, along with several priests, religious, and lay members of the parish. What began as a response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into an annual event that continues to serve more people each year. The local organizing committee raises funds well in advance, ensuring that everyone in attendance on September 8 receives a free meal.
