Sr Mary Michael, one of the original members of the community founded by Mother Angelica and the last surviving founding nun of the network, has died at the age of 94. Her passing closes a chapter in the history of the religious community that grew into a global Catholic media presence.
Sr Mary Michael belonged to the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration and entered religious life in the mid-20th century. She joined the small group of women who, under the leadership of Mother Angelica, PCPA, helped establish a contemplative foundation that later became the world-famous media ministry. Over the decades she faithfully carried out her vocation of prayer, support and service to her community.
Though her role was often hidden from the public spotlight, her presence was felt behind the scenes through the growth and stability of the community. She witnessed dramatic changes in the Church, religious life and communication — from broadcast expansions and digital outreach to shifts in her own monastic world. Through it all she maintained a life of fidelity, humility and steadfast devotion.
Members of the community announced that Sister Mary Michael passed away peacefully, surrounded by sisters who had become her extended family. They noted her “quiet dedication” and described her as “a pillar of prayer and service” whose life was rooted in the gospel and the rhythms of contemplative dedication.
In a statement, the community extended condolences to the family, the wider network of the Poor Clares, and all who were touched by the ministry she helped launch. They invited the faithful to honour her memory by continuing to nourish prayer, service and a spirit of evangelization.
