Pope Francis has designated October 7, the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war, as a day of prayer and fasting for peace. Throughout his pontificate, the Pope has consistently urged days of prayer and fasting for regions experiencing conflict, such as Syria, South Sudan, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.
Speaking after Mass in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope stressed the urgency of prayer in this “dramatic hour of our history,” as war and violence continue to ravage entire nations. He reminded the Christian community of its call to serve humanity by praying for peace. On October 6, the Pope will visit the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where he will offer a petition to the Virgin Mary for peace.
“Let us walk together,” Pope Francis urged, inviting all synod members to join him in this collective prayer effort. He concluded by encouraging everyone to be guided by the Holy Spirit in the pursuit of peace.
