The Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha is commemorating the 28th anniversary of the beatification of Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi, one of its most illustrious sons and a towering figure in the history of the local Church.
The anniversary recalls the historic apostolic visit of Pope John Paul II to Onitsha in March 1998. The Holy Father arrived on March 21 and, on March 22, beatified Fr. Tansi during a solemn Eucharistic celebration attended by thousands of clergy, religious, and lay faithful at the Basilica grounds.
For the Archdiocese of Onitsha, the event remains a defining spiritual milestone, marking the elevation of one of its own to the ranks of the Blessed and placing the local Church on the global map of sanctity. Blessed Tansi, who served as a priest within the then Onitsha ecclesiastical territory before embracing monastic life, is widely remembered for his disciplined priestly life, pastoral zeal, and unwavering commitment to holiness.
Following the beatification, Pope John Paul II departed Nigeria on March 23, concluding a three-day visit that continues to hold deep historical and spiritual significance for the Archdiocese.
As the 28th anniversary is observed, the Archdiocese is inviting the faithful to reflect on the life and virtues of Blessed Tansi, with renewed calls for priests, religious, and laity to emulate his example of sacrifice, integrity, and total dedication to God.
Church authorities note that Blessed Tansi’s legacy remains particularly relevant within the Archdiocese today, as it continues to inspire ongoing efforts in evangelization, moral formation, and the pursuit of holiness among the faithful.
