The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Nigerian referee Yemisi Eunice Akintoye among the 18 officials selected to officiate at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Akintoye, a member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council, has been a FIFA-badged referee since 2020. The 30-year-old earned her place after impressing during a rigorous preparatory course held in Cairo, Egypt, last week.
The course featured “extensive technical assessments, physical fitness tests, and decision-making evaluations under match-like conditions”, ensuring only the best officials made the final cut.
Akintoye is no stranger to high-profile tournaments, having officiated at the CAF Women’s Champions League, WAFU B U-20 Championship, and WAFU B Women’s Champions League.
The 2024 WAFCON finals will take place in Morocco from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Defending champions Banyana Banyana of South Africa will aim to retain their title, while nine-time champions Super Falcons of Nigeria will compete from Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
