The National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Archdiocese of Onitsha has commenced the 2024/25 legal year with a thanksgiving Mass.The Mass was presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha,Most Rev Valerian Okeke at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity on Thursday,26 September ,2024.
The lawyers were led in the thanksgiving Mass by their President in Onitsha Archdiocese,Sir,Barr Azubike Anazor(KSJI).
In his remarks before proceeding with the Mass, Archbishop Okeke commended the lawyers for remembering to open their new legal year with prayers and thanksgiving,and expressed delight that the lawyers were being exemplary in their conduct by putting God first.
The Archbishop thanked the lawyers for the great work they were doing for the Archdiocese and also for their solidarity to the ministry of the church and ensuring that justice prevails in the world.
In his homily,a legal adviser to the Archdiocese, Rev Fr Justin Ileka reflected on the day’s Bible reading by reminding the lawyers that things of the world are vanity and that everything must pass away.
He also reminded them that as lawyers working in the temple of justice,that they have the opportunity to touch the lives of people positively.
Fr Ileka said that though everyone was struggling to survive,they as lawyers must not throw away the ethics of their profession and compromise their Christian faith in pursuit of money.
“You may have big names but if your name is not written in the book of life,it is vanity”,he pointed out.He advised the lawyers to desist from giving bad counsel to their clients so that it would not haunt them at the end.
In his remarks,the President of the association,Sir (Barr)Azubike Anazor eulogized the Archbishop for his love and encouragement to the association since it’s formation. In his remarks at the reception,President of the association,Barrister Anazor on behalf of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Onitsha Archdiocese, thanked all his members who turned out en mass for this year’s Legal Year Mass and Thanksgiving, and the subsequent celebrations that were held at the Protocol Hall of the Archdiocesan Secretariat,Onitsha. He gave special thanks to the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev Valerian Okeke for officiating at the Holy Mass with his priests,the Secretary to the Archbishop,Rev Fr Emmanuel Onunkwo,Rev frs (Barristers) Justin Ileka,Cyprian Okpalakunne, and others for the Episcopal blessings bestowed on the members and other faithful present at the event.
Notably,the chairman of NBA,Onitsha branch,Barrister Afam Obi and other legal luminaries were present.
