The Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council and Monarch of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, has called for the creation of three local government areas from the Obosi community, currently under Idemili North Local Government Area.
Speaking during a recent presentation at the National Assembly in Abuja, Igwe Iweka based his request on the town’s rapidly growing population, strategic location, and robust economic potential.
He stressed that Obosi’s size and contributions to the State warranted a reclassification and administrative upgrade.
“Obosi accounts for over 10 percent of the total votes in Anambra State, which comprises roughly 180 communities,” the Monarch noted.
“Despite hosting 15 urban communities and serving as a hub for numerous residents and visitors, Obosi remains classified as a single community, not even a local government.”
In a detailed memo submitted to the Assembly, Igwe Iweka provided data on the town’s infrastructure, population density, revenue generation, and investment opportunities. He argued that Obosi’s current administrative status under Idemili North, along with other communities, was no longer adequate.
“This is a community that, if situated elsewhere in Nigeria, could easily be split into four LGAs,” he said.
“We are formally requesting the establishment of three local governments within Obosi to reflect its size, development, and economic viability.”
The Monarch appealed to federal lawmakers and relevant authorities to consider the proposal seriously, noting that it represents the aspirations of his people and aligns with principles of fair governance and grassroots development.
