Mater Amabilis Secondary School, Umuoji, has been recognised among eight outstanding schools nationwide with the prestigious WAEC Merit Award. The announcement was made at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, during the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Nigeria National Committee of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The school received the award for being the Best Overall Public Secondary School in All Subjects in the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates. Alongside the award certificate, the school was presented with a cheque of N2.5 million.
The awards were presented by a distinguished panel of dignitaries, including Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria; Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, Chairman of the Nigeria National Committee; Elder Goodluck Chinedu Ubochi, Abia State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education; and a representative of Vatebra Nigeria Limited, the sponsor of the award.

The school manager, Rev. Fr. Francis Onwuchulum, was present at the ceremony to personally receive the prestigious WAEC Merit Award on behalf of Mater Amabilis Secondary School, Umuoji. Overwhelmed with elation, he described the recognition as a demonstration of the dedication of the school’s staff and students, and a milestone in the institution’s pursuit of academic excellence.
Mater Amabilis Umuoji has recently celebrated a series of notable achievements, including top performances in regional science competitions, successful implementation of ICT-driven learning initiatives, and a marked improvement in students’ overall WASSCE results, further cementing its reputation as one of the leading public secondary schools in the country.
