In a remarkable display of compassion and mercy, the Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, facilitated the release of 32 inmates from the Oko Medium Custodian and Benin Correctional Centres in Benin City.
The release, which took place on New Year’s Day, was part of the Archbishop’s efforts to fulfill his earlier promise to intervene in the state government’s prerogative of mercy. The inmates, who were granted freedom, were overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.
In his homily at the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, Archbishop Akubeze assured the inmates of God’s intervention in their lives during the year of hope. He also urged them to become better citizens as they reintegrate into the society.
The Priest in charge of Liturgy at both correctional centers, Very Rev. Fr. Gabriel Ujah Ejembi SJ, disclosed that 19 of the released inmates were from Oko, while 13 were from the Benin Correctional Centre. Fr. Ejembi also revealed that the sum of N1.3 million was spent on the release of the inmates, including food preparation for over 2,400 persons across both centers.
The celebration was made possible through the efforts of the Sir David Osunde Foundation, and other numerous contributors. In a heartwarming display of gratitude, two groups of inmates entertained the Archbishop, priests, religious, and the laity with a cultural display and a play that depicted God’s power to rescue those who trust in Him
