The Justice, Development,Peace and Caritas (JDPC) Archdiocese of Onitsha says there is a massive outcry by many tenants in Anambra State over outrageous increase and extortion in house rent across the State.
A statement released by the Executive Director,JDPC, Archdiocese of Onitsha,Rev Fr Edwin Udoye, said his office is inundated with complaints and appeals for intervention from vulnerable citizens following this development.
According to Fr Udoye,no fewer than 36 complaints have been received in his office by tenants whose landlords were threatening to eject them following increase in rent in addition to other illegal fees.
In that regard, the JDPC has called on the Anambra State Government to wade into the matter by promulgating a law to curb the excesses of landlords and agents over tenants.
Citing Enugu State as a good example, the JDPC said that the state house of assembly is already perfecting a bill seeking to reduce house rent and register those who wish to operate as agents in the state.
The JDPC decried the role of some legal practitioners who collude with landlords to increase tenancy fees and make things difficult for tenants.
The JDPC Onitsha Archdiocese further decried an exorbitant agent’s fee of N100,000 each for flats of residence and also for a single room apartment. The JDPC also described as absurd, the Cola Fee of another N100,000 being collected from tenants.
According to him,a new landlord- tenancy law is very necessary under the present circumstances to check the ugly situation.
