The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has acknowledged errors in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), leading to widespread low scores among candidates. In response, JAMB has announced that candidates from 157 affected examination centers will retake the exam starting Friday, May 16, 2025.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede expressed deep regret over the situation, stating, “What should have been a moment of joy has changed due to one or two errors.” He took full responsibility for the mishap and apologized to the affected candidates.
The decision follows reports that over 1.5 million out of 1.9 million candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks. This unprecedented outcome prompted protests and legal threats from candidates and stakeholders.
JAMB has engaged experts, including members from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria and educational assessment bodies, to investigate the anomalies. The board assures the public of its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process and implementing appropriate remedial measures.
Candidates affected by the errors will be contacted directly by JAMB with details regarding the rescheduled examination. The board urges all stakeholders to remain patient as it works to rectify the situation.
