Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, marked his 65th birthday in a unique and compassionate manner, dedicating the day to visiting patients and inmates across various health and correctional facilities in the State.
Rather than celebrate with fanfare,
Governor Soludo opted for a humanitarian outreach that reflected his leadership philosophy one rooted in empathy, service, and people centered governance.
The Governor’s day began with a visit to the Psychiatric Hospital in Nawfia, where he interacted warmly with patients and staff. He emphasized the importance of mental health and urged the public, especially young people, to prioritize their mental wellbeing.
“Mental health is just as critical as physical health. We must end the stigma and ensure that support systems are in place for those in need,” he said, highlighting the administration’s efforts, including the ongoing construction of a mental rehabilitation facility in Nibo and a promise of support to the Nawfia center.
Governor Soludo next stopped at the Onitsha Correctional Centre, where he delivered a powerful message of hope and rehabilitation. Addressing the inmates, he spoke about second chances and the need for transformation rather than punishment.
“Our correctional facilities must be centers of reform. Everyone deserves a second chance,” he said, encouraging inmates to take advantage of vocational training programs aimed at equipping them with skills for reintegration into society.
The Governor later visited St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital in Onitsha, where he witnessed firsthand the pressing challenges facing the healthcare system, including overcrowding and resource constraints. Reaffirming his administration’s health sector priorities, he said, “Healthcare is a basic human right. We are committed to improving access to quality medical services across the state.”
His final stop was at Iyienu Mission Hospital, Ogidi, where he shared a light-hearted moment cutting a birthday cake with students and staff. His presence lifted the spirits of many and reinforced his administration’s dedication to the welfare of the vulnerable.
Reflecting on the day, Governor Soludo said: “This birthday is not just a milestone it’s a renewed call to service. My 65th year will be focused on uplifting the underserved, empowering the vulnerable, and fostering healing throughout Anambra.”
Accompanying the Governor on the visits were his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike; Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Protocol, Mr. Chinedu Nwoye; and other senior government official.
