Fidelity Bank Plc has extended support to more than 2,000 vulnerable residents of Anambra State through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Food Bank initiative.
The outreach, which took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Emmaus House in Awka, brought together the elderly, widows, low-income earners, and other disadvantaged groups from surrounding communities. Beneficiaries received food packs containing rice, beans, garri, wheat, beverages, milk, soup ingredients, and seasonings.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Nosa Orumwense, Regional Bank Head for Awka, explained that the initiative aligns with the bank’s mission to fight hunger and uplift communities. He noted that since its launch in April 2023, the food bank has distributed more than 200,000 food packs Nationwide.
“As a socially responsible organisation, Fidelity Bank partners with both government and communities to bring relief to the less privileged. This initiative seeks to ease the burden of poverty and cushion the effects of the present economic hardship,” Orumwense said.
The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, commended the bank’s gesture, describing food, air, and shelter as essentials of life.
He urged other corporate bodies and philanthropists to emulate the initiative, while calling on government to work towards improving the economy.
Similarly, the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Ibezim, represented by his administrative assistant, Prince Chuma Oranye, lauded Fidelity Bank for showing compassion at a time of widespread hardship.
“The reality is that things are very tough. Many cannot afford three square meals. A hungry man cannot praise God,” he remarked.
Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Chinedu Okafor, also appreciated the bank for complementing government’s efforts in caring for the needy.
In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Levi Uko, Coordinator of the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), Awka Diocese, expressed delight over the partnership.
“We are happy to collaborate with Fidelity Bank in reaching out to those struggling with hunger. We hope this relationship continues,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Adanma Mbah, thanked the bank, describing the support as timely. “This foodstuff will go a long way in supporting my family,” she said.
