Benue State security forces announced the arrest of suspects linked to the recent attack in Yelwata, which resulted in multiple fatalities.
Commissioner of Police Emenari Ifeanyi made the announcement at a Sunday press briefing, but withheld the suspects’ identities.
The arrests follow President Tinubu’s Wednesday directive to the service chiefs and Inspector General of Police to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The Police Commissioner credited Governor Hyacinth Alia’s support for the arrests.
Furthermore, reinforcements from the Inspector General of Police have arrived and been deployed to rural communities to enhance security.
The Commissioner urged landlords and hotel owners to scrutinize tenants and guests to help prevent further violence.
President Tinubu, during his visit to Benue State last Wednesday, pressed for swift action, directly challenging the IGP and service chiefs on the slow response.
He emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and improved intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.
He called on the Directors-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the State Security Service (SSS) to enhance their intelligence networks.
Gunmen, suspected to be herders, attacked the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area last week, leaving numerous fatalities and displacing thousands.
