Chiara Porro, Australia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, acknowledges the significance of celebrating women in diplomacy on the annual International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed on June 24th. She reflects on the traditionally male-dominated field of diplomatic service and recalls her early days in the Australian Foreign Service, where the corridors were adorned with portraits of men. This lack of representation can be intimidating, as “you can’t be what you can’t see.”
However, Ambassador Porro emphasizes that the Australian Foreign Service has actively addressed this issue and made substantial progress in promoting women in leadership roles over the past six years. The number of women serving as ambassadors has risen from 20% to over 40% during this period. Chiara Porro emphasizes that diversity is crucial in diplomacy, as men and women working together bring unique perspectives and qualities.
Ambassador Porro emphasizes the importance of representing the diversity of the country while acting as the face of Australia. Women diplomats enable connections with societies worldwide that may not always be accessible to men. In dealing with conflicts and development issues, diversity is crucial. Women are often the most affected during conflicts and humanitarian disasters, and having women lead diplomatic efforts helps reach those most impacted.
Ambassador Porro also highlights the representation of First Nations People in Australia’s diplomacy. Australia is home to the world’s oldest continuous living culture, and sharing this heritage and culture with the world is a central part of their foreign policy. The Holy See and Australia collaborate in preserving and protecting the rights of indigenous peoples, with Pope Francis actively championing this cause.
Working with her fellow women ambassadors at the Holy See has been inspiring for Ambassador Porro. They form a formidable group of around 25 ambassadors who challenge biases, bring their voices to the table, and showcase their unique talents and perspectives as women leaders. Ambassador Porro believes there is still progress to be made but acknowledges the growing recognition of what women bring to the field of diplomacy. She encourages both women and men interested in a diplomatic career to value and understand the contributions they each bring, emphasizing the importance of confidence in their abilities.
Ambassador Porro highlights the wisdom shared by religious sisters in this environment and emphasizes the need for collective effort in empowering women. Men’s support is crucial in advancing the agenda of gender equality and benefiting everyone involved. By working together, meaningful change can be achieved.
