The Archdiocese of Rosario in Argentina has issued a statement about the ecclesial ministry of Leda Bergonzi, 44, a member of the Catholic charismatic group “Breath of the Living God.” Bergonzi is known for her ministry, where a “charism of healing” is attributed to her.
This ministry gained national attention when the mother and brother of renowned soccer player Lionel Messi attended one of the prayer meetings. These gatherings, held weekly, have grown in attendance, prompting a relocation to Independence Park Fairgrounds in Rosario.
The Archdiocese of Rosario clarified that this phenomenon is taking place within the Catholic Church, emphasizing the diversity of expressions, groups, and communities within the Church. The “Breath of the Living God” community, described as a charismatic prayer and evangelization group, has been active for approximately eight years and is guided by a diocesan priest from Rosario.
The statement underlined that the Church is accompanying this phenomenon to discern its depth and solidity, as it has produced positive effects in many individuals. It also highlighted that charisms are bestowed by the Lord to confirm the mission and the power of the Gospel proclamation.
The archdiocese explained the purpose of the charism of healing, stating that it is a tangible manifestation of God’s merciful and compassionate love, serving to heal the poor and needy through the power of the Holy Spirit. Additionally, it described the charism of “prayer for deliverance” as a supplication to free individuals from the influence of the devil, while the gift of tongues is primarily for glorifying and praising God.
In these prayer meetings, there is a sense of fraternal communion, and the individual with the “charism of healing” does not act alone; the community participates and accompanies. A group of priests currently accompanies this experience, with meetings beginning with Mass, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and Benediction.
The archdiocese emphasized the importance of documenting any testimonies of healings with simplicity and precision, subject to ecclesiastical authority. The Church of Rosario’s goal is that this event produces many spiritual fruits, including a deeper Christian life, especially in prayer and the sacraments of confession and the Eucharist.
In conclusion, the archdiocese acknowledged its role in overseeing and guiding this phenomenon, ensuring it aligns with the mission of the Church and contributes to spiritual growth and healing among the faithful.
