The metropolitan archbishop of Onitsha, the Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, on Easter Sunday hosted Governor Soludo’s special adviser on youth development and empowerment (SPAD), Dr Nelson Omenugha, and his then fiancé, Chidera Mary, shortly before they were wedded at St Patrick Cathedral, Awka, on Saturday, April 15, 2023.
The archbishop blessed the couple and set them on the right spiritual path for the journey ahead.
Dr Omenugha in his brief remark said he held the archbishop in high esteem as a father and great friend of the Omenugha dynasty of Nnobi, adding that his wedding would not be complete if he (the archbishop) did not play a role in it.
The high-profile wedding attracted the cardinal bishop of the Ekwulobia Diocese, His Eminence Peter Okpaleke; the Catholic bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, the Most Rev. Matthew Kukah; and Bishop Jonas Benson of the Nnewi Diocese, among other bishops who were represented.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State was represented by his deputy, Dr Onyeka Ibezim. The speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Uche Okafor, some members of the state exco, and members of the State House of Assembly were present. Dozens of priests, dignitaries and other guests from all walks of life also attended the wedding.
Trinitas monitored both the wedding at the cathedral and reception which took place at the International Conference Centre, Awka.
It was about the biggest colourful event in town where the creme de la creme of the country and from overseas graced the occasion.
Apart from many other side attractions, the new wife, Mary, was presented with a brand new SUV by the Omenugha family as a sign of love and welcome to her new home.
The Omenugha dynasty in Nnobi is a noble family that has contributed immensely to the development of the Nnobi community and Anambra State in general.
The father of the groom, Sir Mike Omenugha (KSJI), held several positions in his community, including being the president general of Nnobi. He used his medical qualification to help the poor and less privileged at his hospital positioned strategically in his community.
His wife, Prof. Kate Omenugha, former head of the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, served as the Anambra State commissioner for education where she contributed immensely to the state’s educational development.
