In a bid to strengthen security and combat crime in Anambra State, the government has enacted the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, 2025.
The new law, which was made public recently, outlines offenses and penalties aimed at curbing supernatural powers, religious place abuses, and human parts rituals.
In that regard,many of the juju ritualists spotted at various streams and rivers across the state have gone underground.
According to Clause 18 of the law, any person found guilty of using supernatural powers to commit offenses or accumulate wealth illegally shall be liable to imprisonment for six years or a fine of N20 million, or both.
Specifically, the law states that “any person who under the practice of ‘Okeite’ or ‘Eze Nwanyi’ or under any other guise, administers any substance or charm on or for any other person for the purpose of commission of any offense or for the purpose of accumulation of wealth by supernatural means other than by any known lawful means of livelihood commits an offense.”
Furthermore, the law prohibits the dumping of charms or substances on roads or in water bodies, with offenders facing imprisonment for six years or a fine of N20 million, or both.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who signed the law, emphasized the need for a secure and peaceful environment in the state. “We must take all necessary steps to protect our citizens and our communities from harm,” he said.
The law also takes a tough stance on the use of religious places for criminal activities. Any person found guilty of such offenses shall be liable to imprisonment for six years or a fine of N20 million, or both.
In addition, the law gives the governor the power to seal any religious place suspected of being used for criminal activities, pending the conclusion of investigations.
The law is designed to protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens, while also ensuring that those who break the law are held accountable.”
The law also prohibits human parts rituals, with offenders facing imprisonment for 25 years without an option of fine.
With these tougher security laws in place, the state government aims to curb crime and ensure that Anambra remains a peaceful and secure place for all.
