Ahead of predicted severe flooding in Anambra State in 2025, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a preventative sensitization campaign in two high-risk local government areas: Anambra East and Ogbaru.
Eight Anambra LGAs are typically affected by annual flooding, including those mentioned above, plus Ayamelum, Idemili South, Awka North, Ihiala, and Ekwusigo.
NEMA’s Dr. Tigma Tanimu briefed Anambra’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, explaining that the agency, directed by DG Zubaida Umar, aims to proactively engage communities, emphasizing early warning systems to minimize loss of life and property.
The campaign includes collaborative work with the Naval Base in Ogbaru on a forthcoming simulation exercise.
This forms part of NEMA’s national preparedness and response campaign for 2025, focusing on preventative measures.
Dr. Tanimu stressed the importance of community participation in disaster management, highlighting the need for collaboration across all sectors to build national resilience.
The Deputy Governor echoed this sentiment, stating that Anambra State has a multi-sectoral approach to flood management, including early warning systems, improved holding centers, and strategic relocation plans.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to working with NEMA and leveraging the effective Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) for support.
The proactive visit by NEMA before the flood season was praised as a positive step.
