On the morning of Monday, April 20th, Pope Francis received a delegation from Loyola University, Chicago, in the Hall of the Popes at the Vatican. The visit, part of a pilgrimage to the birthplace of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was marked by a speech from the Pope emphasizing the essential role of academic institutions in today’s rapidly changing world.
Pope Francis greeted the President and Board of Trustees of Loyola University, expressing his hope that their visit to the roots of Ignatius’ life and spirituality had enriched and inspired their academic and personal growth. He underscored the importance of returning to one’s roots to draw strength and move forward, noting that the institution’s foundation lies in Saint Ignatius’ dedication to seeking God’s will and serving others.
Reflecting on the Jesuit tradition of discernment and action that guides Loyola University, the Pope encouraged the delegation to persist in their quest for truth through deep reflection, attentive listening, and courageous action. He highlighted the need for academic institutions to be witnesses of hope in a world marked by division and conflict, advocating for cooperation and resolution at higher levels.
Pope Francis stressed the comprehensive nature of education, which must engage the mind, heart, and hands. He called for the formation of individuals who embody the values of reconciliation and justice, capable of meeting the demands of contemporary challenges with intellectual curiosity, cooperation, and a spirit of service. He urged the academic community to cultivate critical thinking, discernment, and a sensitivity to global issues, always striving to make the world a better place.
In a time of rapid change and complex challenges, the Pope highlighted the critical role of academic institutions not only in forming knowledgeable minds but also in developing generous hearts and consciences attentive to the dignity of every person. He emphasized the importance of dreaming and creativity, noting that life without poetry and dreams lacks vitality.
Pope Francis encouraged the delegation to continue the legacy of Saint Ignatius by fostering intercultural and interreligious dialogue, promoting mutual understanding, cooperation, and bridge-building between different traditions and cultures. He concluded by offering his prayers and requesting theirs, acknowledging the difficulties of his role and reaffirming the power of hope as an anchor for the future.
