Pope Leo XIV has issued a heartfelt appeal to content creators and online influencers, urging them to be authentic “digital missionaries”who prioritize real human connection over metrics and fame. Speaking to thousands gathered in Rome for the Jubilee 2025 event dedicated to “Influencers and Digital Missionaries,” the pope challenged them to rediscover the purpose behind their platforms.
In a rapidly evolving digital age, where podcasts, reels, and livestreams dominate the global conversation, the pope acknowledged that “science and technology influence the way we live in the world — even how we understand ourselves, others, and God.”But he warned that creativity must never come at the cost of human dignity.
“You are here to renew your commitment to nourish Christian hope in social networks and online spaces,”Pope Leo declared, reminding the digital missionaries of their higher calling — to be peacebuilders in a world broken by conflict, isolation, and spiritual emptiness. “Peace must be sought, proclaimed, and shared everywhere — in war zones and in the hearts of those who have lost the meaning of life.”
He called on them to be “missionary disciples” who carry the light of Christ even to the “farthest reaches” of cyberspace — especially to places where hope has withered.
But Pope Leo also didn’t shy away from addressing the pitfalls of the digital world. “Always look for the suffering flesh of Christ in every brother and sister you encounter online,” he urged. “We find ourselves in a new culture — deeply shaped by technology. It’s up to you to ensure that this culture remains human.”
He emphasized that the Church has never been passive in the face of cultural shifts, and now, with the rise of artificial intelligence and digital interconnectivity, a new era has dawned — one that demands discernment, responsibility, and a deeper witness to truth and love.
“This is a challenge we must face together,” he said. “We need a language and a mindset rooted in Love — one that helps us listen, understand, and connect hearts.”
To the influencers, the pope offered a clear warning: their vocation is not about generating likes or followers, but about “creating encounters between hearts.” He invited them to lay down pretenses, recognize their own spiritual poverty, and make space for the Gospel in their content — content that brings healing, hope, and meaning to those on the margins.
“Don’t forget real friendship,”he said. “Experience the greatness of infinite Love in every encounter. Build networks that give space to others, not just to ourselves — networks that no algorithm can silence, especially when it comes to the cries of the weakest.”
Pope Leo concluded with a poetic vision of digital evangelization: “Let every story of shared goodness become a knot in the network of God — a single, immense network of truth, beauty, and salvation.”
