After the Sunday Angelus on October 8th, Pope Francis announced a Consistory for the creation of 21 new Cardinals on December 8, 2024, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This major event will take place in the Vatican, preceding the 2025 Jubilee of Hope and following the conclusion of the Second Session of the Synod on Synodality.
The Pope highlighted the diverse origins of the Cardinal-elects, emphasizing the universal mission of the Church. “Their inclusion in the Diocese of Rome manifests the inseparable bond between the See of Peter and the particular Churches spread throughout the world,” Pope Francis said. He also called on the faithful to pray for the new Cardinals, asking that their fidelity to Christ help him in his ministry for the good of the Church.
With the upcoming Consistory, the College of Cardinals will increase to 256 members, with 141 electors eligible to participate in a papal conclave.
