Christians have been admonished to detach themselves from people, things and places that lead them to sin. The Catholic Bishop of Zaria, Most Rev. Dr. Habila Tyiakonaboi Daboh gave this charge in Zaria as a guide to achieving Lenten observances successfully.
He catechized that in addition to fasting from food, Christians are also meant to fast from habits that do not give glory to God.
“Let us avoid going to places that will make us to commit sin.” The bishop charged. “Let us avoid going to people who will encourage us to commit sin. Fasting is not all about food. Fast from ‘amibo’. Fast from gossiping. Fast from fornication. Stop immorality. Go and confess your sins and begin this Lent on a clean slate.”
“We are ambassadors of Christ and God is calling us to repentance. As humans, we can commit sin. But when we commit sin, we need to go for confession. We need to go back to God and ask for forgiveness. Go back and reconcile with Him. Apologize to Him. He is going to receive and forgive you. We are weak, but God wants humility from us. Let us repent.”
